Rocky Ridge could become Juab County's newest community soon.

Rocky Ridge, known locally as the Allred Ranch, began as a small farming community located near the Juab County border west of I-15.Several years ago, town residents discussed incorporation with county commissioners and proposed the name of York after a railroad community that had been located in the same area.

On Monday commissioners received a petition from the registered voters of the small community proposing the name of Rocky Ridge and seeking incorporation. The issue is on the agenda of Monday's commission meeting.

"Residents of Rocky Ridge first applied for township status, which would have required the majority of registered voters vote in the November election," said Gordon Young, commission chairman. How-ever, the residents of the proposed township withdrew the request, seeking instead to incorporate.

In order to become a community, a majority of registered voters of the proposed town need to petition the commission, said County Attorney David Leavitt. The petition was submitted to the commission on Monday in keeping with the state requirement for incorporation.

"The proposed town must also have more than 100 residents," said Leavitt. "They have a population of 210." That is the total number of residents, not just the number of registered voters.

Pat Greenwood, county clerk-treasurer, will now certify the signatures on the petition to make certain they are registered voters in Juab County.

"If the commission approves the request," said Leavitt, "then the commission must appoint a mayor and a town board."

"We will take recommendations from the residents of the town," said Young.

After the initial appointments, the new town board must meet within a week and begin forming town ordinances, zoning and regulating the business of the community.

"There will then be five incorporated communities in Juab County," said Leavitt.

The others are Eureka, Nephi, Mona and Levan. Other small communities in west Juab include Fish Springs, Callao and Partoun - none of which are incorporated.

In some ways, said Lunt, the incorporation will help the county because some of the headaches that once belonged to the county will become the responsibility of town leaders.
