CARLSBAD, Calif. -- The carnage is complete.
After three rounds of surprises in the Match Play Championship, Jeff Maggert pulled off the biggest shocker of them all Friday afternoon, beating Tiger Woods in the quarterfinals with two of the most important clubs in match play -- a wedge and a putter."Tiger was the dragon, and someone had to slay him," said Maggert, who did just that with five birdies over eight holes for a 2 and 1 victory.
The stunning victory -- and there have been plenty of those all week -- made Maggert the highest seed remaining for the All-American weekend. At No. 24, he'll play No. 61 Steve Pate in the semifinals on Saturday, while No. 50 Andrew Magee meets No. 27 John Huston.
"I knew I was in Tiger's bracket, and if I wanted to play Sunday I'd have to beat him," Maggert said.
TUCSON OPEN: Streaky Gabriel Hjertstedt's on-again, off-again game propelled him into the lead of the Tucson Open on Friday, then deserted him at the end.
The 27-year-old Swede, who missed the cut in three of five previous tournaments this year, birdied six holes on the difficult back nine at Tucson National, but lost his touch after the turn and bogeyed the last hole to back into a tie with Scott Gump at 9-under-par 135.
AUSTRALIAN LADIES MASTERS: At Gold Coast, Australia, Karrie Webb is not only chasing her second consecutive Australian Ladies Masters title, she's also after an LPGA scoring record.
Webb, back in her home country, shot a 67 Friday to go with a 63 on Thursday. That gave her a total of 14-under-par 130, one stroke shy of Judy Dickinson's 36-hole record of 15-under 129.
ACE GROUP CLASSIC: At Naples, Fla., Allen Doyle used his slapshot-style swing to shoot a course-record 64 Friday for a one-stroke lead after one round of the Ace Group Classic seniors tournament.
Doyle's 8-under par at the Bay Colony Golf Club put him one shot ahead of Vicente Fernandez and two in front of Jerry McGee.
