JAGS' LAGEMAN RETIRES: Defensive lineman Jeff Lageman, a key component in making the Jacksonville Jaguars competitive early in their existence, announced he is retiring after 10 seasons in the NFL.Before the 1998 season, he signed a one-year contract in hopes of reaching the Super Bowl for the first time. On the first play of the season, however, he tore his biceps and was lost for the year. His absence at Jacksonville's offseason conditioning program and lack of contact with coach Tom Coughlin made it clear he would not return.

PLATINUM 400: Bobby Labonte won the MBNA Platinum 400 thanks to a smart call by his crew chief. Jimmy Makar brought in Labonte to top off the tank of his Pontiac just before the end of the final caution period on lap 293. It was just enough to get him to the end.

The decision cost Jeff Gordon the race for the second straight year. He was forced to stop for a splash of gas with five laps remaining and finished 22.017 seconds behind Labonte. Last year, he stopped with eight to go, giving the victory to Dale Jarrett.

CHARISMATIC ON MEND: Charismatic not only failed in his bid to win the triple crown Saturday in the Belmont Stakes but also fractured two bones in his left front leg.

On Sunday, the 3-year-old colt was taken to a veterinary clinic for surgery. Four screws were put into his left foreleg to repair the fractured bones. Charismatic will never race again. His career now will be that of a stallion.
