The Critics Choice Awards are coming up, a prelude to the anticipated outcome of the Oscars.

As one of the season’s first major stops, they offer a glimpse into the landscape of Oscar contenders.

But how much weight do these early accolades truly carry?

Who, what and when are the Critics Choice Awards?

The Critics Choice Awards, honoring “the finest in cinematic achievement,” according to Film Affinity, are set to take place in February.

The event is organized by the Critics Choice Association, a collective of broadcast, radio, film critics and journalists, who review both film and television, stated on the official Critics Choice website.

Founded 28 years ago by Joey Berlin and Rod Lurie, the association has long been a key player in recognizing excellence in entertainment.

Originally scheduled for Jan. 12, the awards show has been moved to Friday, Feb. 7, due to the Los Angeles fires.

The red carpet, usually an event unto itself ahead of the show, will not be happening this year, according to US Weekly.

Do the Critics Choice Awards predict the outcome for the Oscars?

As awards season unfolds, film and television fans closely track nominees and winners, crafting predictions for the Oscars.

The Critics Choice Awards, as one of the season’s earlier events, often sparks debate over its predictive power. But how much weight does this particular ceremony carry in the lead-up to the Academy Awards?

Gold Derby said the Critics Choice Awards are “renowned as one of the best barometers for predicting the Oscars.”

Variety stated there is no known overlap between the voters of the Critics Choice Awards and the Academy.

Berlin said, according to Variety, that the voters of the Critics Choice Awards “comprises approximately 600 film and television critics and reporters.”

Berlin also noted, “The awards are significant to audiences and the industry alike. While the gold standard awards — the Oscars and the Emmys — are voted on by those who make movies and TV, the Critics Choice Awards are voted on by the people who watch and judge these arts for a living.”

Though the voters for the Critics Choice Awards differ from those of the Oscars, the Critics Choice Awards has long provided valuable insight into the likely outcomes of the Academy Awards.

In 2024, the Critics Choice Awards set the stage, with many of its winners also claiming victory at the Oscars. The overlap between the two ceremonies included wins for best picture (“Oppenheimer”), best adapted screenplay (“American Fiction”), and best cinematography (“Oppenheimer”). Emma Stone was recognized for best actress, while Robert Downey Jr. took home best supporting actor, among other identical victories.

Whether the Critics Choice Awards influence Academy voters is still up for debate, but one thing is certain: The night promises unforgettable moments.
