Utah Jazz legend John Stockton almost didn’t appear in the ESPN documentary on Michael Jordan, “The Last Dance,” according to the series’ director.

What’s the news:

“The Last Dance” director Jason Hehir told The Dan Patrick Show that Stockton was reluctant to appear in “The Last Dance.”

Hehir said: “I finally got (Stockton) on the phone after like two years of chasing him,” Hehir said. “(Stockton) said, ‘I don’t want to be a part of a Michael Jordan puff piece.’”

Hehir said: “I had never heard John Stockton’s voice. I’d never heard it, he’s so reticent, he could have sounded like Scottie Pippen or he could have sounded like my mom. I had no idea what he was going to sound like.”

According to KSL Sports, Stockton remained out of the public spotlight since he retired in 2003.

According to The Los Angeles Times, the documentary isn’t even completely finished. In fact, “The Last Dance” has been in a production rush, some of which involved Stockton.

Hehir told The Los Angeles Times he went out to interview Stockton in Spokane, Washington, for the final episode. But ESPN called off the trip because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Hehir told The Los Angeles Times: “We didn’t know what shelter in place even meant at that point. We would not have been able to finish if I was stuck in Spokane for an extended period of time.”
