Real Salt Lake’s historic 2026 Leagues Cup campaign came to a close Tuesday, Aug. 25, as the Claret-and-Cobalt fell 3-0 to Mexican side Club León at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Denver, Colorado. With the result, León extended its win streak in all competitions to seven games and set up a semifinal with Liga MX side CF Monterrey.
RSL’s historic campaign comes to an end
Tuesday’s Leagues Cup quarterfinal was a first for RSL, with the 2026 edition of the tournament being the furthest the Utah side has ever made it in the competition. Phase One saw RSL in elite form, drawing Tigres UNAL before beating Atlante FC (4-0) and FC Juarez (3-0) — a stretch that made RSL history for the most goals scored in two games without conceding.
After resting players in RSL’s last MLS game against Orlando City SC, Head coach Pablo Mastroeni made 11 changes from to the starting lineup against León. Among those returning to the lineup were captain Rafael Cabral, designated player Morgan Guilavogui and in-form rookie Sergi Solans, who recently signed an extension with the Claret-and-Cobalt. Despite fielding a rested 11, León were the dominant side on Tuesday, demonstrating why it finished first among Liga MX teams in Phase One of the competition.

“Goals change the mindset, mentality and momentum,” said Head coach Pablo Mastroeni. “When you’re in a stretch like we currently are, it’s really easy to get down. We need a soldier mentality now, where we expect it not to go our way, but we’re still ready for the fight.”
Game summary
The Mexican side got the breakthrough goal just 21 minutes in, continuing the dominant form it displayed in Phase One of the competition. After a well-worked team move, Díber Cambinado beat DeAndre Yedlin to a cross at the back post, finishing with a left-footed shot to the bottom left corner to give León a 1-0 lead. The goal ended RSL’s 284 minute shutout streak, a run it had maintained since minute six of its Leagues Cup opener against Tigres. The Claret-and-Cobalt grew into the half, creating dangerous chances just before the break. Red-hot rookie Sergi Solans came closest to finding the equalizer with a pair of shots on target, but RSL was unable to tie the encounter before halftime.
The Utah side created chances early in the second half but was unable to capitalize, leaving the door open for León to double its lead. The Mexican side did so in the 66th minute, converting with a header from Sebastián Vegas following a corner kick from Fernando Beltran. Less than 10 minutes later, in the 72nd, Cambinado got the dagger for León, scoring his second of the night after a skillful move around goalkeeper Cabral. RSL was unable to find a way back into the match, and León extended its dominant Leagues Cup win streak to four games in Denver.

Real Salt Lake returns to MLS play this Saturday, Aug. 25, traveling to face Rocky Mountain Cup rival Colorado (9-11-1, 28 points, 7th West) at Dicks’ Sporting Goods Park. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. MDT, with the match available to stream on AppleTV.
